The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Galveston and Houston is expected to announce the retirement of Archbishop Joseph Fiorenza.
Church law requires bishops and archbishops to resign at age 75, and Fiorenza celebrated his 75th birthday last month.
The archdiocese is expected to announce that Pope Benedict the 16th has accepted Fiorenza's resignation.
Archbishop Coadjutor Daniel DiNardo is the automatic successor.
Fiorenza has headed the archdiocese since February 1985.
