The man who drove his car into a Missouri City home, killing the couple inside tried to kill himself late Monday, according to Missouri City police.
Police say Manuel Chicas used a shoelace to hang himself in his jail cell, but they found him before it was too late.
He was taken to an area hospital and will remain under psychiatric care.
Chicas was charged Tuesday in the deaths of Jose and Zanaida Castroarena.
They were sleeping in their home in the 2000 block of James Madison when a car crashed through their bedroom.
Chicas faces charges of two counts of manslaughter and one count of failure to stop and render aid.
His bond is set at $45,000.
