Seems Ken Lay's attorney is getting frustrated during the beginning of cross-examination of Andrew Fastow over a hearing problem. On several occasions Monday, Fastow asked Ramsey to repeat a question. After lunch, Ramsey shot back "Am I not speaking loud enough?" "No," Fastow answered, "I have a little bit of a hearing problem. I don't mean to be disrespectful. I'm trying to listen." The scene almost repeated itself a half hour later. After Fastow asked to have a question repeated, Ramsey cleared his throat and raised his voice in court speaking in his southern drawl. Then minutes later, responding to a question, Fastow said "With all due respect, sir..." "I don't need any respect!," Ramsey interrupted. Realizing what he had said, Ramsey continued "I'm sorry I shouldn't have said that," to Judge Sim Lake. Judge Lake coolly told Ramsey to "calm down." It just wouldn't stop. A couple questions later, Fastow asked Ramsey to repeat a question. "Can you really not hear me?," Ramsey asked. "Feel free to ask your client," Fastow said. "I do have a hearing problem. I don't mean to be rude. I do have a hearing problem." These exchanges all happened within an hour. Ramsey finished his cross-examination of Fastow by 2:20 p.m. Monday. |
