11 News anchor Len Cannon covered the JonBenet Ramsey case nearly a decade ago while working as a national network correspondent and he shared these reflections: "I was one of the hordes of media that descended on Colorado just days after JonBenet was killed in December of 1996. The story grabbed everyone's attention -- especially the pictures of the little girl in various pageant costumes and makeup. My first stories pondered a lot of questions that cast suspicion on the parents John and Patsy Ramsey. Questions like the odd figure in the ransom note. Who would leave a note and not call? Who would request a ransom but leave a body? I interviewed the couple's first attorney and talked with a woman who made JonBenet's dresses for her pageants. The District Attorney in Boulder at the time was criticized for not arresting the Ramseys. He insisted on taking his time, but I do remember sitting at a news conference in Boulder where he pointed at the camera and said, "Whoever you are, we will find you." It was a stunning moment in the investigation. As time went on with no arrests, the pundits continued to speculate, books were written, made for TV movies aired. I must have visited Colorado two dozen times over a couple of years because of the intense fascination with the story. Finally, a grand jury convened. It deliberated for months, as I recall. When the grand jury decided not to hand up any indictments, the Ramseys, who had been convicted in the court of public opinion, gained a measure of satisfaction. The story would fade over the years, but never disappear. Now an arrest has finally been made and the hordes are back in Colorado. But I can tell the Boulder D.A. is already warning people to not rush to judgment until they have a solid case. I can't believe JonBenet is making headlines, nearly 10 years after I first made that December visit." |
