Kennedy Space Center readies

Call it the final, final word on rolling back Atlantis. It won't come till tomorrow morning but in the meantime workers are getting ready for a storm.

The winds here probably won't be much more than tropical storm winds. But it's enough to damage the shuttle, especially the tank. So it seems inevitable it will move back to safety.

The official status here is HURCON 3. As in "We are presently at HURCON 3. Go out and make sure things are secured." It's a little like a national security alert except this is NASA and they count down. HURCON 2 is a bigger deal than HURCON 3.

So what does this mean to us. It means the trailer I'm sitting in won't be here tomorrow. It means the roof of the CBS building where I do live shots will have to be cleared of all equipment and the all important plywood that keeps us from sinking into the tar when the Florida sun turns the roof to ooze.

The interesting part is that it is a beautiful day here in this part of Florida. There is no sign of a storm and it has every indication that it would have been a great day to send up a shuttle.
