By Wendell Edwards / 11 News CYPRESS FAIRBANKS --- The letter is about three pages long and it's accompanied by a chart. David Anthony, the superintendent of Cy-Fair ISD, wrote to his employees April 9th about, "the most difficult professional dilemma that I have encountered in my 34 years in education." Sounds serious, huh? It sort of is. Just try cutting nearly $24 million dollars out of your budget. "Some positions in the district will be eliminated," he wrote. "No area in our district will be untouched, including district-level staff." Anthony sent this letter to warn employees and parents about next year's financial crisis. It is not good news. A new state funding formula is giving Cy-Fair less money for each student, compared to neighboring districts. Formula? Funding per student? Kelli Durham, assistant superintendent, says too much so to try to explain on 90 second news story. But the truth is, the district may have to cut some jobs and service in order to streamline the budget. "We do not want to want to impact the classroom, however, when you cut services that's felt," she said. And that is simple to understand. It's not want administrators want, but it's the bottom line. And soon more school districts may also be feeling the same pinch. So why is school funding so messed up? Now that's the truly is the complicated question. |
