Fundraising problems may force students in the Big “D” Marching Band at Dallas’ Townview magnet school to scrap plans to participate in a “pre-Olympic” festival in China this summer.

The band – regarded as one of the area’s best – has raised about $60,000, but it needs to raise another $500,000 in the next few months to meet deposit deadlines. Band director Dean Hill said the band needs about $200,000 by Jan. 15 in order to secure the lowest-possible airfares.

“If we’re going to pull this off, it’s going to take corporate donations," he said. "We’re just not getting the dollar amounts we hoped for.”
