What the media, blogs and others are saying about DISD today. ** It's a thin gruel of Dish today. A teacher says things at Roosevelt haven't gotten any better since a slew of teachers turned out at a school board meeting last month to protest the actions of their new principal. If any teacher has personal experience with these requests to change grades, e-mail us. ** KERA blogs the DISD arts initiative that got touted in Washington last week. |

Do people really know how bad the Texas in general are? The SAT scores for Texas are awful. Further, if you look at the test scores for the good students and the students of parents making >$100K per year, they lag the other states also.

The same old story of principals bugging teachers to change athletes' grades pops up again and again in DISD.
If the Superintendent would fire the next principal that did this, I bet the word would get around quickly, and this practice would stop.

Their is a lot more than grade change going on at this school. Admininstators not doing their jobs. Assistant Principals changing attendance records of students who has been skipping class. Admin. yelling and degrading teachers in front of students. I know. I am there everyday

Has anyone noticed how the District is scheduling more and more "meetings" for Fridays, a day which used to be reserved for "work?"
Looking at my calendar, I see that I spend almost 60% of my time in "meetings" and "curriculum discussions" which take me away from actually DOING any work. Of course, the 2nd tier people think these are critical. Remember when we used to actually teach and work with kids? Now it seems that DISD just wants to have meetings.

Giving a minimum grade of 50 is just typical thinking of the Idiots-on-the-Left that have made the DISD just another Third World school district.

Mike Kagy--
Actually the vote to keep the 50 as a minimum was strongly supported by trustees who represent the REPUBLICAN North Dallas area, so the comment that this is a "left" idea is off-base.
I have spoken before the board about this idea in the past, and I still object to not telling it like it really is on a report card, the most important piece of communication between a teacher and a parent.
But as for now, the battle is lost. The idea of "increased rigor" is a joke if we can't document the actual grade. "Giving" a 50 to cover a lower grade may be popular, but it has yet to be proven that the kids actually have higher passing rates because of it.
If anyone has a peer-reviewed study that PROVES a 50 to cover a lower grade INCREASES a child's success, please let us know.
As for a coach or principal asking a teacher to change a grade, that can easily be remedied. Have the final grades of each athlete printed out and have each teacher verify them as true and correct--again--by signing it. Maybe if the added step of having to openly sign off on a grade might release the teacher from pressure to change a grade.
I hope that next year, this very subject will be brought up in New Teacher Orientation. If the DISD really pushes the idea of not tolerating this type of thing, that would really help get the message out.
