DISD spokesman responds to "rumor"

rumors.jpgThere's been a lot said about the district's plan to move some Skyline magnets to Conrad High School. Some folks attending a recent community meeting -- and on this blog (5th entry from bottom) -- say teachers have been threatened with firing if they don't get the cluster kids to move to Conrad with them. Trustee Ron Price addressed the matter at Tuesday's community meeting, saying if the threat has been made, it's "mean spirited" and would not be taken lightly.

But Jon Dahlander, DISD spokesman, said today that the allegation is "absolutely not true" and "we would be very surprised to learn that someone has been threatened with firing."

Anyone care to comment?

Parents and Students who are upset about magnet programs moving to Conrad High School will have one thing to cheer about! Richland College will be servicing that school and it's students. Richland College will be offering Tech Prep and Dual Credit opportunities at Conrad. Both of these programs allow students to earn free college credit while still in high school. That's only the beginning! Go Thunderducks!

I think they are already doing that at Eastfield. . .

As Mr. Dahlander was present at the meeting when Dr. Micheaud told Skyline teachers that if their students did not move to Conrad they would have no employment, I'm suprised that he would make such a statement.

Michaeud was cold and indifferent to the staff, parents, and students of Skyline High when she presented her "done deal" proposal. I know for a fact that 200+ people in attendance recall her statement to the cluster teacher who asked about job security in moving to Conrad.

Donna Micheaux, when she spoke at Skyline, told one of the effected teachers that if her children didn't go with her to Conrad, "you will not have a program".

In 2007 the parents, teachers, students and community members of A. Maceo Smith High School attended several board meetings, marched with signs at 3700 Ross and held several on campus meeting in an effort to be heard regarding the removal of Mr. D.Govan. Not once did Mr.Hinojosa tell us that he would revisit the issue, not once did he come to our school to address us on a personal level and not once did he acknowledge our presence at the board meetings. I am happy for the Skyline parents and students and offended that Mr. Hinojosa did not take the concerns of the stakeholders at Smith seriously.

Congratulations to Skyline teachers, parents and students. Your efforts are proof that Mr. Hinojosa does listen to some groups he just failed to listen to the A.Maceo Smith group!

With respect, the two situations were completely different. I understand the reverence with which Mr. Govan was held at Maceo, but the issue with Skyline was not a personnel one--who will be principal. Principals come and go, but programs are what students attend a school for. And that was what was being "tinkered" with, the cluster programs.

I will agree with you that it seems to take a protest to get attention, and that is a shame. Teacher unions do bring up teacher concerns, since I represent NEA-Dallas frequently at DISD meetings. And believe it or not, they DO listen most of the time. Many decisions made on Ross Avenue are done with care and concern, but not always.

The issue here was no input, so nobody was listening. That has now been resolved, and we have invested our trust in Dr. Hinojosa that we will have a better solution that we can all live with, himself included.
