Dallas arson investigators were at Dallas ISD's central office at Ross Avenue this morning talking to administrators about a fire at an office building next to Lincoln High early Monday morning.

The office was home to a grant writing department. District grant spending has been the subject of recent investigations and audits. Arson investigators wanted to know if those probes would have given any district employees reason to destroy records by burning the office.

A district spokesman confirmed that arson is suspected in the fire, but said it appears unlikely that the fire was set to thwart spending investigations. The office that was destroyed did not house records related to those probes. Also, the district is able to recreate all of the destroyed records, said spokesman Jon Dahlander.

The fire also caused significantly more damage than originally reported, Mr. Dahlander said. The cost of the blaze is likely to be in the neighborhood of $750,000 because the office had been recently renovated.
