An easier King Ranch Casserole

At least one reader took exception to Anne Greer McCann's simplified King Ranch Casserole recipe. Not the real deal, the reader says.
But with so many versions of this Texas classic floating around, who's to say?

I make it when we have it. Although, I have to admit that I haven't made it in years. Is there really some "authentic" way to make it? All the recipes I've seen varied quite a bit. What makes it the real deal?
