An SMU task force [The Substance Abuse Prevention Task Force] created in the aftermath of three student death related to drugs or alcohol has recommended opening a campus pub that would serve beer... Personally, I think this is one of the dumbest ideas I've ever seen. A) You want the kids to stop drinking so much, so you open a bar? B) if a kid dies as a result of an accident or alcohol poisoning, parents can sue the bar and if the bar is on the campus, will that mean SMU will get tied up in a lawsuit too? C) Wait...could a student get work/study credit hours for being the bartender? By the way drinkers, please remember that drunks cannot take care of drunks. Thereby debunking the idea--from a student--who says "If we keep it in a place that is enclosed and we are able to watch everyone, then a lot of the issues that come with drinking and drugs can be stopped." Thoughts? It's not exactly style-related but heck, don't we doll ourselves up to hit the town? SMU students, you out there? What do you think? SMU alums, what about you? photo Jason Janik/Special Contributor |

I think a positive of having a bar (or pub as they call it) operated on campus because the school can show that alcohol can be consumed responsibly and outside of a raucous atmosphere. The main problem with the idea is that the the legal limit is 21 but it's the under-21 kids that are most at risk.

Anyone in college can over consume alcohol, and you can drink too much whether it is served on or off campus and regardless of age. SMU's reasoning to put a bar on campus because of related drug and alcohol deaths seems ridiculous. They will still drink excessively somewhere else and ditto with the drugs. They should try another approach and it seems strange a religious based school of all places would encourage drinking. Why would any college student want to got out on campus, that is half the reason you go to SMU to live in Dallas and enjoy the nightlife scene, New Idea Please
