Price smackdown: The cool graphic hoodie

12:52 PM Sun, Jan 20, 2008 |
David Ninh   E-mail   News tips

splatterhoodie.jpgKidrobot.jpg

I've been spying TONS of fun, colorful hoodies for guys everywhere.

While I wish I could drop $185 for one of the cool Kidrobot ones (right) at Barneys, I ended up finding a fun option yesterday at - surprise - my new fave store Forever 21!

The "Paint Splatter" hoodie at Forever 21 NorthPark (left) isn't as thick as the Kidrobot version and has buttons instead of a zipper, but hey -- it's only $23 and just as cool.

'Mad Money' movie premiere: An insider's look

BrianMadMoney.jpg DianeKMadmoney.jpg

We've blogged in the past about reader Bryan Massey's sorta hunky resemblance to Patrick Swayze.

Well Mr. Massey has moved on to, shall we say, GREENER pastures. The local actor has a bit part in the new movie Mad Money which opened this weekend. We had to find out how the stars looked up close and his experience on the red - errr green - carpet. Luckily, he also took pics for us, including this one where he was standing behind Diane Keaton and Queen Latifah.

Here's what he had to say about the experience.

Red Carpet Cred: Debra Messing - Good or Good-bye?

Jason Sheeler   E-mail   News tips

debra%20messing%20in%20oscar.JPG With little to no red carpet action so far, let's take a moment to question a celebrity's decisions. Debra Messing, who tends to look well turned out, chose a vintage tiered-black-velvet Oscar de la Renta dress for what would have been a Golden Globes party hosted by In Style magazine. She (or her stylist Rachel Zoe) found the frock at Rare Vintage in New York.

Readers: What do you think of her look?

Issac Mizrahi leaves Target to revamp Liz Claiborne

7:55 AM Sat, Jan 19, 2008 |
Jason Sheeler   E-mail   News tips

issac.jpgIsaac Mizrahi, the multi-tasking multiple fashion personality, left Target on Tuesday for a Creative Director position at Liz Claiborne. According to the New York Times, Target attempted to hold on to Mizrahi, whose collection sold about $300 million each year, but could not match Claiborne's offer. With the new collection to be sold in retailers like Macy's and Dilllard's, it posed a serious conflict with Mizrahi's Target collection.

We wish him the best, ” Susan Giesen, a Target spokeswoman, told the New York Times.

JohnBartlett02-1.jpg

One day before the Mizrahi announcement, Claiborne announced John Bartlett, left, would design mens for the label. Bartlett is known for his provocative clothing and even more provocative shows in the nineties. He recently relaunched his collection, softening his edge, and opened his first store.

Underage Models: Paris says no one under 18 can work on Sunday

1:37 PM Fri, Jan 18, 2008 |
Paige Phelps   E-mail   News tips

NFD_08MODELSEARCH03%5B1%5D.JPG According to blog Fashionista, a new law has been passed in Paris saying no one under 18 can work on Sundays. (I can't find this anywhere else, anyone know where to look?) This apparently wreaks havoc for the catwalk:

"Paris Sunday is supposed to be Lanvin, Louis Vuitton, and Miu Miu. If the law holds for Paris Fashion Week, that takes out Tanya D, Ali Michael , Chanel Iman, Karlie Kloss, Toni Garrn, Ali Stephens... plus anybody new who's getting big. Casting directors are NOT happy."

Now, coincidentally, last year around this time the Council of Fashion Designers of America issued model guidelines to "take a stand on issues of anorexia and bulimia amongst models. They include keeping models under age 16 off the runway and not allowing models under 18 to work on fittings or photo shoots past midnight ." (However these were suggestions and not binding.)

A fashion guru here says "Paris has always been a wrinkle" because they do not allow under 16s to work the runway, so I wonder how many new wrinkles this new law will create, if any. Developing...

Buy vegan stilettos from Natalie Portman collection

David Ninh   E-mail   News tips

PortmanWe kinda start groaning around here whenever we get news that yet ANOTHER celeb is "designing" or "collaborating" on a fashion or accessory line, but I'll give kudos to this one for being animal-friendly.

According to today's imdb.com's movie news:

"Natalie Portman has collaborated with a U.S. fashion firm to launch a range of vegan footwear. The Natalie Portman Collection - made in partnership with specialty shoe retailer Te Casan and the actress' stylist Kate Young - will feature 20 pairs of limited edition, hand-crafted designs that are completely animal-friendly, with a price tag of $200 each. The Closer star says, "As a vegan, I don't wear leather, fur, or feathers. Shopping for clothes hasn't proved too difficult, but finding chic footwear has definitely been a challenge."...The line will debut in stores February 1 with 100 percent of proceeds benefitting The Nature Conservancy, an organization dedicated to protecting the environment."

Update: Gender bending at Prada Men's show

4:26 PM Thu, Jan 17, 2008 |
David Ninh   E-mail   News tips

Pradamenskirt2It looks like our Prada men's "skirt" blog generated some strong reader reaction. The Prada men's show last Saturday in Milan had us a bit dumbfounded by this added flouncy micro miniskirt paired with --naturally-- skinny metallic pants.

Reader Serena Warren brought up an interesting point, "Where are the pumps, necklace and the earrings. If we aren't confused enough, why not create more suspense and keep us guessing. Is it real or is it facsimile of a MAN."

Well Serena, it looks like Miuccia wanted to play with a "duality" theme here and sent her lanky male models in outfits that had some feminine flourishes. Style.com's review said, "traditional concepts of masculinity had been turned inside out."

Reader Varis Swentz commented, "Oh my gosh! It's hideous! I would kill my husband if he tried to wear that in public. Then again, gay men just might eat it up."

Reader Steve W. responded with, "Your insulting the gay male population is not needed. No gay man with any sense of fashion ... which we all have, ya know ... would ever wear this piece of stupidity! Come to think of it, I would never want to see a lesbian in this!"

And I haven't even gotten to the MANKINI that was also presented in the show. Click HERE to view the whole collection and judge for yourselves.

We recently found a DVD workout that teaches you (in theory, at least) how to conquer sraight-off-the-catwalk 4-inch YSLs. Producers claim that Legwork: The Secret to Sexy Heel Wearing & Fitness increases "sexiness, grace and confidence in heels" with exercises that can be done every other day "for best results."

The DVD (Legwork Video New York, $19.95) is available on amazon.com.

Project Runway: Kit gets auf'ed

8:18 AM Thu, Jan 17, 2008 |
David Ninh   E-mail   News tips

Kit.jpg

The Bravo producers are such tricksters! Naturally we thought Victorya and Jillian's lack of time management skills would put them in the bottom two, but in the end, it was the overconfident designers that felt the wrath from the judges this week.

Sweet P had a great strategy...when faced with the fact that she was working with an egomaniac like Rami (who was adamant about designing the "couture" dress without her input) she did the smart thing and focused on her own "day" look- a one-shouldered silver dress, which surprisingly - looked super duper chic. Rami's complicated drapey avant garde number left the judges yawning and left Heidi remarking, "Unfortunately the only drama we saw was between you and Sweet P!" SLAM!

For the life of me, I have no idea why Ricky is still even in this competition. Sure his "minority-overcoming-against-all-odds" bit tugs at heart strings (I have some of those stories myself), but there is one thing that he clearly lacks in this competition - consistency. Unfortunately it was team leader Kit (she's also a wardrobe stylist for E! Entertainment) who got the boot, after her oversized "nesting" creation that looked like a Gone WIth the Wind-reject, had the judges critical of everything from the wrinkled satin to the dowdy fabric.

Until next week...carry on!

Project Runway: Haute Drama

Jason Sheeler   E-mail   News tips

vic%20wins.jpg"Do I have enough cigarettes today?" Sweet P asked at the beginning of the show. She needed them this week, working and sniping with Rami as the designers teamed up to tackle two looks: one couture and one ready-to-wear. Christian and Chris ("Team Fierce") won the challenge with a dress eating up 45 yards of fabric. Sweet P looked visibly nicotine needy as she faced the judges. Her teammate, however, was in the bottom two. In the end, Kit went home. Michael Kors take? Her model looked like "she ripped the sheets off the bed and ran out the door."

Target buzz: Jovovich Hawk? Jonathan Saunders?

6:06 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008 |
David Ninh   E-mail   News tips

Saunders.jpgOnce Erin Fetherston's GO International collaboration with Target moves out, whose designs will take over those T stands? The Target reps remain mum and wouldn't divulge, only telling me over the phone that their next designer line will be "fabulous".

The company's website continues to keep us guessing: "Friends for over 13 years, these LA based designers launched their first clothing collection in 2003. Their designs of classic shapes, striking prints and playful finishes have already gained a fan base from chic women 'round the globe." The line debuts March 1 in Target stores and website.

We did some creative googling and figured it out - we think. Looks like the new budget line will likely be helmed by the design duo of Jovovich Hawk -- model-actress-designer Milla Jovovich (yes, the chick in the Fifth Element) and Carmen Hawk.

Target is on a roll!

According to WWD, the next designer being courted is rumored to be Jonathan Saunders. The Scottish designer's signature graphic prints were all over his cheap chic collab with Brit-based Topshop. Here's crossing our fingers he'll show the love stateside as well...

wedding.jpg britneywed1%5B1%5D.jpg
So Spears has been seen out and about a couple of times in her newly tailored wedding gown. (Is that really the gown? On second look I have my doubts...)

Now on the one hand, it's her wedding dress. She can do whatever you want to it, right? And, heck, a girl can only wear the thing once and that seems like a real shame, don't it y'all? But on the other hand, to chop up a perfectly lovely gown and turn it into Sadie Hawkins Dance attire a la Wet Seal, well...

It's a good thing Ms. Spears didn't show up for court. She wouldn't have liked the verdict on this one.

"Pull 'Em Up" Campaigns

pull_em_up%5B1%5D.jpgI have no objections to the campaigns geared toward putting a bit of style back in to the daily wardrobe. What I do object to is the lame, lame, LAME billboards and slogans created to target hip-hop teens.

"That's not hip-hop. That's flip flop." And "Don’t Be Lame Elevate Your Game," "Represent Yourself Like You Present Yourself."

Geeze. Did Will "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It" Smith write these lines? I think Skee-Lo could've written something better. ("Wish I was little bit taller/ I wish I was a baller/I wish I had a girl who looked good I would call her/ I wish I had a rabbit in a hat with a bat...")

Look, how do I know these are lame? The creator of the Grandma campaign, Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway, says "his war on saggy pants has prompted calls from the likes of Dr. Phil."

Need I say more?

Sagging pants in Ft. Worth: Is it really a problem?

Jason Sheeler   E-mail   News tips

baggy.jpg

Dallas Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway is trying to get you to pull your pants up. And he wants to make it the law.

From the Dallas Morning News:

Dallas Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway's "Pull 'Em Up" campaign against sagging pants might be getting the thumbs up from the Fort Worth City Council.

The council is scheduled to vote Tuesday on a resolution supporting the crusade against the popular fashion trend. At first, Mr. Caraway asked his fellow Dallas council members to outlaw the wearing of pants that hung so low that they exposed the person's underwear, but the city attorney's office was concerned about the legality of such an ordinance. Instead, Mr. Caraway has continued with a public relations campaign that included a series of billboards and a planned appearance on the Dr. Phil show.

The resolution on the Fort Worth council agenda said the fashion style might "result in them [young people] being negatively stereotyped and harm their ability to be accepted and participate in general society."

A company called Broken Beauties has figured out a way to fuse function and fashion when it comes to healing broken bones! Their website sells a slew of colorful, patterned arm slings, cast covers, crutch covers, cast toe coverings, hot/cold therapy packs and more!

Men's minis at Prada in Milan?

PradamenPradamen3

Ok I'm all about taking fashion risks. Sometimes my colors clash. Friends tell me my ensembles can veer dangerously close to 80s - like BAD 80s. I once owned a pair of baby blue UGG boots and wore them in public. A stretch metallic headband from American Apparel is sitting on my dresser waiting for the right fashionable moment to make its debut.

But looking at photos of yesterday's Prada men's fall 2008 show in Milan, I was struck dumbfounded of what Miuccia sent out on her runway -- something that looked like little mini ruffled miniskirts???

Project Runway: House of Dang's Andrew Bayer speaks!

1:15 PM Thu, Jan 10, 2008 |
David Ninh   E-mail   News tips

NHG_02dang.JPG

Local stylist and designer Andrew Bayer is our guest commentator this week. He co-owns local vintage/thrift hot spot House of Dang! over on 4219 Bryan St. in Dallas.

Here's what he had to say about last night's "prom challenge" episode:

"My thoughts on Project Runway: There is one person that I can totally relate to this season, and his name is Christian. We are similar in so many ways and here are a few examples:

1. He was voted best dressed at prom and I was a self appointed prom king.
2. He thinks prom is tacky and gross and I think prom is tacky and gross.
3. His hair looks like something I would have done to my head when I was 21 (but I would have had more product in it to appear more greasy). Very Precious.
4. He made that girl look like a tootsie roll last night, and I enjoy tootsie rolls.

In conclusion, I think that Rami is talented, Victorya used cheap rhinestones, the guy with the hat has not made one thing that I like, and Kevin looks like Joey Fatone from N’Sync. This season is getting better and better!"

Project Runway: Victorya emerges victorious

VicPR.jpg

This one was a doozy. I agree with Christian when he promptly exclaimed, "I think prom is horrible and tacky and gross!" Well, at least the dresses.

The contestants had a tres difficult challenge this week -- trying to merge their creative talents and artistic visions with teenage girls wanting cheesy prom dresses. In the end, Victorya emerged victoriously with her youthful, beaded, bright blue number.

Kevin, our token "straight" male contestant, got the boot for his bright red halter top mess, that lead Judge Kors to exclaim, "I think she looked like $29.95 prom!" It'll be interesting to see all the male contestants left duke and claw it out!

Project Runway: My favorite lines of the night

Jason Sheeler   E-mail   News tips

gallery_images_Episode_07_pic03.jpg Christian continues to be the Dorothy Parker of Parsons' sixth floor workrooms.

Here are a few of his quips, with other contributions, too:

"I think prom is horrible tacky and gross," Christian said, when learning the challenge was to create a prom dress.

"Do you want it low in the front or the back," Christian asked his client. "Both," she answered. (p.s., I found calling the 16-year olds 'clients' almost creepy. Did anyone else feel awkward every time Tim said that, or are those my issues?)

"You guys are really miss me tomorrow when I’m eliminated," he told his roommates.

"She wanted so much tacky stuff, I was vey scared," Christian told the judges about his "clients" requests.

"I'm not going home because I am listening to a teenager," Sweet P said.

"It really looks like something an Italian divorce would wear,” Victorya said about Christians look.

"It’s kind of bulging, are you pregnant?" Ricky’s clients mother said, patting her stomach. (Cheers, Mother. Cue: body dysmorphia.)

"When I had a girlfriend, I made her prom dress. That should have been a clue right there," Ricky told of his prom experience.

"What do you guys want to do in life? Chris asked the teens. "Absolutely nothing," one girl replied. So I assume relief work in Africa is out.

"You know how the judging has been going," Tim warned Kevin when he saw the unfinished hem of his dress. But Ms. Roberts declined to provide any further details. “It was not our intent to publicize,” she said. “It wouldn’t have been appropriate.”"

Uh-oh. Two Dallas ladies showed up on the infamous Blackwell worst dressed list this year.

Mr. Blackwell says, "Can it get any worse? She's a global fashion curse!" for Jessica Simpson and "Her heavenly voice soars above the rest...but those belly-baring bombs are hellish at best!" for Kelly Clarkson.

(I didn't realize Mr. Blackwell wrote in rhyme. Wouldn't some also consider that quite tacky?)

What do you think readers? Lindsay Lohan made the bad list and sometimes I just adore her outfits (rainbow, anyone?).

Of course, then again, covering herself up (while standing up) is a particular problem for the starlet, so perhaps I do agree.

Mix: Modern Clothes in Houston closes

David Ninh   E-mail   News tips

NFL_HotHouston4.JPG

When I tell people I'm a fashion reporter, people who have never been to our fair state always ask me, "There's fashion in Texas? What is there?" One of my answers would be Mix in Houston. We spotlighted Evelyn Gorman's hip Houston haven, Mix: Modern Clothes, last year in F!D luxe.

Unfortunately, the designer boutique has closed. Gorman carried hard-to-find European lables like Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Comme des Garçons, Lanvin and more and started her business in 1999 out of her living room in Houston, eventually expanding to a 4,500-square foot space. She's moving to Manhattan with her husband and plans to reopen a boutique are nil.

In an interview with Women's Wear Daily, she says that the closing was like "a big dark cloud came over all [my] regular customers. There were a lot of tears and 'Please don't go. There's no place else to shop.' There are other places to shop. There's Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue."

Jessica Simpson Gets Some Love From the Fug Girls

Paige Phelps   E-mail   News tips

DISNEY%20CHRISTMAS%20JESSICA%20SIMPSON%5B1%5D.JPG The girls from Go Fug Yourself write a column in New York Mag and their 12/20/07 column, "Since When is Jessica Simpson a Spinster?" made me laugh out loud.

Essentially,at the ripe old age of 27, she's been deemed a washed-up dud. We don't even like her, and we think that's rotten.... On its own, the Romo brouhaha is idiotic. It's not Jessica's fault Tony is the only quarterback in the NFL who can't function in front of pretty girls....

Simpson certainly isn't the first to receive the Sad Old Loser treatment; the tabloids often act as though being a starlet whose every dalliance does not end in engagement is tantamount to having a terminal illness. Jessica follows in the shriveled footsteps of such tragic spinsters as Cameron Diaz — obviously dried up at 35 — and Jennifer Aniston, whose reluctance to take the plunge after that awesome first marriage clearly indicates she's pathetic. But Jessica is the youngest to be singled out just for being, well, single (so far; at this rate they'll be writing off Miley Cyrus if she hits 19 without a "promise ring").

Read the whole article here for more hilarity.

Madame Gres exhibit at Fashion Istitute of Technology

gres.jpg
Just heard about a cool exhibit at FIT in New York. For those of you not in NYC from Feb. 2 to April 19, there will be a book of the legendary designer, known for her fluid Grecian-like dresses.
Pre-order from Amazon here.

From press release:
Madame Madame Grès: Sphinx of Fashion presents the work of the great Parisian couturiere, Madame Alix Grès. She created gowns of exquisite beauty and dressed many of the most stylish women of the twentieth century. One of the most brilliant dressmakers of the twentieth century, her work is noted for its sculptural quality and innovative construction techniques.

This exhibition, with over seventy garments from both museum and private collections, will present the three most important stylistic elements of Madame Grès’s work: her classically-inspired pleated gowns usually made of matte silk jersey; her simple and geometric designs based on ethnic costume; and the three-dimensional, sculptural quality that was a hallmark of much of her work.

Top trends of 2007 in, um, plastic surgery

10:27 AM Thu, Jan 03, 2008 |
Jason Sheeler   E-mail   News tips

ashley%20tis%20nose.jpg
With all the furor surrounding Ashley Tisdale's new schnoz, let's take a look back on what went down (or up) last year in the world of cosmetic "enhancements," courtesy of Dr. Greg Weiner, from whom I received this today, via press release:

The beginning of every year is a time to plan the year ahead as well as reflect on the year gone. Expert plastic surgeon Dr. Greg Wiener has reflected on the past year and gives us a bit of a recap on what was hot in ’07!

Silicone Breast Implants-With the return of silicone, women found that their breast augmentations are looking and feeling more real than with saline

Non-invasive wrinkle erasers- Dr. Wiener has seen non-invasive procedures take on a life of their own recently. With options such as Radiesse, Restylane and the newest Profractional Laser, men and women alike have the option of expunging their wrinkles in a weekend with very little downtime and no scarring.

Male Patients- One of the hottest trends we are seeing and will continue to see is men undergoing more cosmetic procedures. With more emphasis on men and their looks and less taboos around plastic surgery, the numbers of males getting nipped and tucked have and will continue to skyrocket!

Liposuction- Dr. Wiener states “Liposuction will always be a hot procedure in the cosmetic surgery industry. It is unbeatable in fat reduction results and both men and women turn to lipo when working on their perceived problem areas.”

Rhinoplasty- Another staple procedure is rhinoplasty; people are realizing more and more that they don’t have to live with the nose they were born with.

heidi%20ken%20zac.jpgI know it's reality TV, but why is Heidi Klum the only one who gets to wear powder? I also what to know how her body looks like that after three kids. I had one kid and had to put a plastic surgeon on retainer.

Just when you think that the Runway team might run out of thrilling challenges, they come up with a trip to the Hershey's store on Times Square, which immediately caused my mouth to start watering like one of Pavlov's dogs. Overloaded with goodies, the contestants headed back to get started on a sugar rush day of designing. The competent, confident Christian knocked out his Reeses Cups goodie in record time while Sweet P put together a monstrosity that Tim referred to as a "coffee filter or maxipad." (Thank God for menopause.)

Jillian's Twizzler bustier and skirt seemed like it was destind to flop, especially with Chris' admonitions about edible clothing. But with the help of her model, she pulled it all off beautifully. Poor Elisa. She should have stuck to her stream-of-consciousness/psychobabble method of designing, which really works for her, instead of dwelling on her horrible car accident experience and playing it safe. What was Victorya thinking when she told her model to walk like that? All I could think about was John Cleese's crazy walks in old episodes of Monty Python. My son Dallas said that Ricki's number reminded him of a painting of a Spanish warlord he saw at the Meadows Museum. Zac Posen, who made me promise to take him to Zippers and the Roundup (favorite haunts of many visiting fashion dignitaries) on his next trip to Dallas, seemed to light up when Rami's dress hit the runway. My husband Bill, Dallas and I all loved it and think he could teach Nicholas Ghesquiere a thing or two about how to dress a "tron" woman.

The best part of the episode is that they are going to auction off all the dresses for The Young Survival Coalition - a non-profit organization the young women with breast cancer.

Project Runway: Elisa Jimenez go bye-bye

Jason Sheeler   E-mail   News tips

elisa%20loses.jpg
Okay, it was bad. It was not cool. And she said something that sounded like "ashtray" when she was leaving. But she is compelling television. And having met her last week at the Contemporary, she's as pretty as she is genuine. (Full disclosure: she told me I am very 'light,' so I love her.)

Comments about her losing look:

"It worries me," said Tim, in response to Elisa’s Hansel and Gretel theme. (She wanted to make something fairy tale for her daughter Calliope. Her daughter wanted her to do Runway and she was picked for Season one, actually. She did this season to "reclaim" life.)
"Wow me," he said. "Working on the wow," Elisa said.

Ricky called it "Barney Rubble."

"It's not wearable, it's not fabulous," commented guest judge Zac Posen.

"Her dress was just a hot mess," Christian says of Elisa's look. He compared the sleeves to kid's "swimmies."

We got a sad brown dress," Heidi said.

Elisa told me standing on the runway in front of the judges was like "dodgeball."

She began the episode with "I want to make it to the final three." The Booker T. grad left the show with, "I'm going to wander off now."

Readers: WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT HER LOOK?

Ashtray.

"Fortified" Elisa Jimenez leaves Project Runway

11:05 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008 |
David Ninh   E-mail   News tips

NGL_17elisanew.JPG

Come on...you all KNEW she wouldn't last.

From Episode One, we all sensed Elisa was a little "special" with her kooky spiritual mumbo jumbo -- which quite frankly, was really starting to grow on me. You know her story about getting hit by the Porshe in London and having her head split open made you go AWWW! Not to mention, we also wanted to root for the final remaining Texan still standing. But at the end of the day (literally) the most creative, over-the-top challenge proved far TOO challenging for the over-the-top designer, who wanted to create a "macabre" fairy-tale dress inspired by Gretel. She created something BORING. SO boring that it lead Judge Kors to call it "a brown velvet dress you would find in a flea market" that showed "no joy of candy" and Host Klum to comment that it was "a SAD brown dress".

The contestants were literally dragged out of bed to head down to Hershey's Time Square and had five whole minutes to gather materials to create a fashionable, wearable, fun design in ONE day. The designers struggled with this one - and Jillian gets the Tim Gunn award for the day for making it WORK with that sassy, little red twizzler corset ensemble.

eye%20candy%20two.jpgMalan's clever comment of the night, besides the title of this entry: "Oh Zac Posen is back, he is so sweet." Har.

My fave comment of the night comes from Christian, naturally. "It is a tranny mess up in here," he said, surveying the work room filled with improvised, costume-like garments.

chris%20chic.jpg
Surprise of the night? From the comeback kid, Chris. His strapless, self-proclaimed Stephen Sprouse inspired dress was a hit with the judges. "Chris, he could have given me the parade float," Michael Kors said. "Sometimes we question his taste level. Chris' was very sophisticated."

Nina gave a huge thumbs up with, "This girl could go into a studio and be shot for the pages of Elle. She's all set." Go, Chris!

eyecandy%20one.jpgAssignment: 5 minutes to grab whatever the designers can in the Hersheys Times Square store! Here is Malan's initial take!

Wow! Yes Amanda [the model] is still in, Amanda walked in my Spring 2007 showing she is a great model. Heidi has some very red lips tonight! I am not loving her dress tonight, it does not fit properly.
The wonderful Tim Gunn, those early mornings are rough. Usually around six am. A field trip? Hersheys, OMG! after the holidays I never want to see chocolate again.

Twizzlers! Brilliant. I am really enjoying Jillian, I am so curious. [Jillian is the only designer who chose to work with actual candy]

I wonder who will get the chocolate body paint! Oh sorry this is not Sports Illustrated. Hahaha!
I love that Chris knows who Stephen Sprouse is I met him in the Nineties what a brilliant designer. [Chris says his look is very Stephen Sprouse]
What an amazing story Elisa has! Its amazing she is alive...

He is talking about Elisa's accident in London -- she was hit by a car and in a coma for 5 days. Yikes.

Oil Barron Style: Historic $100/Barrel Commemorative Jewelry

3:14 PM Wed, Jan 02, 2008 |
Paige Phelps   E-mail   News tips

crude_black%5B1%5D.jpg With today's news that oil hit $100 a barrel, it's time to roll out the "satirical bling" from Design Glut.

The firm promised that when oil reached the $100 mark, they would "produce 100 limited edition Crude Necklaces with a high gloss black surface finish. The pieces can be seen a symbol of mourning for the fossil fuel era."

The pieces will be engraved with $100.00 and the date. Buyers will have a choice between powder-coated brass ($100) or a black-patina 18 karat gold ($1000). (you can also get gold-plated silver and soild 14K gold.) Buy the necklaces at their website, here.

"Design Glut‘s aim with the limited-edition release is to create a historical marker, in hopes that one day, when you are charging your electric car with your children, you can say, 'I remember when crude hit $100.'"

Cool necklace, scary concept. Hmmm. I believe the German word Angstlust is appropriate here. It means "the enjoyment of fear."

The New Ugly: 2007 Design Ushered in the "Artless"

032c_01%5B1%5D.jpg 032c_05%5B1%5D.jpg

In the International Herald Tribune, Alice Rawsthorn discusses the ups and downs of 2007 design and names Berlin Magazine 032C best of the year "for adopting Mike Meiré's flagrantly controversial "New Ugly" style." (cover and inside pictured above.)

Blogger Mag Culture says, "but this new 032c is so willfully awkward that the artless feel remains just that, artless."

Author Virginia Postrel says in her book The Substance of Style that our current love affair with design and aesthetics drives the global economy...so here's a movement that completely eschews beauty and goes for brutality.

Designer Mike Meiré:

"There are so many magazines out there which pretend to be cool, sophisticated or even culturally relevant. They all look the same, more or less. (…oouh! I know! There are a few good magazines out there! But I am talking about the rest, the 99.9%!) They all play this stylish “classy” Feuilleton-inspired design game."

[interviewer]: Is it anti-design?
MM: It is what it is. Isn’t it? If you call it anti-design, that’s fine with me. I think being anti is important these days. Sometimes there is a real need to say NO. There is so much stuff around us …

So, readers, what do you think? Maybe rock and roll isn't dead...it's just morphed into the world of graphic design.

"Who?" may be your answer when hearing these names, but based on the history of the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation, you won't be saying that for long.

The winners: Elise Overland, Alexander Wang, Réyes by José Ramón Reyes, Lyell by Emma Fletcher and Wayne by Wayne D. Lee in the women's wear category, and Loden Dager by Alexander Galan, Oliver Helden, Paul Marlow, Matthew Sandager and Melissa Vail for men's wear.

Previous recipients of the $25,000 in prize money include: Proenza Schouler, Peter Som, Zac Posen, Thakoon, Doo.Ri, Derek Lam and current Target designer Erin Fetherston.

Judges for the prestigious award included Neiman Marcus' Ken Downing.

On a personal note, I graduated from college with Elise Overland. In school she worked primarily in leather, already making pants for the likes of Lenny Kravitz our senior year.

Macy's closing nine stores, including Valley View Center location

“While the decision to close stores is difficult, it is necessary that we do so selectively in locations with declining sales and where we have been unable to identify sufficient growth opportunities."
Terry J. Lundgren, chairman, president and ceo of Macy's, Inc.

In the next several weeks, Macy's will shutter nine of it's doors, Valley View center among them. The location, opening in 1973 as Sanger Harris, was Foley's before becoming Macy's in 2006. The store closings will affect 900 people.

On a less depressing note, the clearance sale starts Jan. 13!

It's nice to see that condoms are useful for more than just, well...you know.

A fashion event dubbed "Dress Up Against AIDS" held in Kuala Lumpur yesterday had models sporting designs made out of colorful condoms. Students from a local beauty/makeup academy took part in the fashion show. Considering that Malaysia is a Muslim-majority country, it's sorta a big deal.

If I see this on the DIFFA runway this year, I can only guess where the idea came from...

The daughter of designer Angela and much photographed student says, "If the dress code is cocktail, why not wear shorts and high heels? It can still be formal and is a new kind of elegance."

After going to Parsons and living on Avenue B, I've seen plenty of jean shorts and high heels, but I am wondering what you think.

Supermodel Erin Wasson appears in the current Dec. issue of Vogue Australia. The mag profiled the Irving-native (AND 1997 F!D/Kim Dawson Model Search winner), interviewing her when she was attending Rosemount Australian Fashion Week in Sydney.

She then headed out to coastal hippie spot Byron Bay with Vogue's fashion team shooting guerrilla-style and worked with the fashion directors on styling herself. Her found vintage jewelry pieces are completely her own -- a small selection of which is for sale at V.O.D. at Victory Park.

The earthy photos showcase her "tomboy in fish-nets" style. She also states in the article that her "fashion weakness" is "a really good white T-shirt".

COMING SOON: We hear that Erin's collaborating on a line with RVCA! Stay tuned!

Rachel Zoe's advice for $24.99. Plus tax.

zoebook.jpg"I admit that I always wanted to run with a fast crowd," Rachel Zoe writes in her new book, Style A to Zoe, written with Rose Apodaca. And, four years after first working with Nicole Richie, the Hollywood stylist runs a lot, with tabloid mainstays Lindsay Lohan, Jennifer Garner and Keira Knightly. The much-photographed actresses reportedly pay Ms. Zoe as much as $6,000 to dress them for events ranging from the Academy Awards to stepping out of the house.

The "Rachel Zoe look" (tawny hair, tanned skin, slinky jersey tops, big sunglasses) has cut quite a path through fashion over the past few years, much like the image-broker herself. She appears in cellphone ads, sits front row at Chanel couture shows and designs handbags for Leiber (formerly Judith Leiber).

With chapters titled "Excessories" and "Lip gloss and mane toss," Ms. Zoe offers advice on how to be a fashionable jet-setter, or just look like one.

The internet is all abuzz with rumors that Sarah Jessica Parker and the other "Sex" ladies are getting the works for their new flick -- thanks to the power of digital airbrushing (HINT: google "Sex and the City" and "airbrushing").

We caught wind of the rumor this morning while checking one of our favorite daily guilty pleasures NY Post's Page Six!

Readers, would you get it done? Or proudly show off those age lines?

Where Lindsay and Keira get dressed: see Rachel Zoe's house!

Jason Sheeler   E-mail   News tips

zoe%20home.jpg
Rachel Zoe, stylist to Lindsay, Micha, Keira and other thin-spiring celebs, put her West Hollywood home on the market in November. Googling the image broker with Jedi instincts, I came across luxist.com, a great blog featuring, er, luxury items from clutches to Nelson desk clocks. And famous people's real estate listings.

zoebots.jpg

Zoe, 36, and her husband bought the two-bedroom pad in 2001 for $914,000 and it's priced now at $2,995,000. Gulp. The "real estalker" is credited for first breaking this story.

At right, Zoe, with Zoe-bot Micha Barton and recovering Zoe-bot Nicole Richie. Richie no longer works with The Rachel.

Erin Fetherston's whimsical party dresses and flirty separates get the fashion press excited during New York Fashion Week. Her cheap-for-chic collaboration for Target got shoppers who haven't heard of the California-born/Paris-trained designer excited.

The collection is almost heading out the door and the pieces are all on sale.

My fave piece is this chiffon layered dress with satin trim marked down to $32! I spied a whole rack full of the dresses at the Target at Cityplace.

Who says the devoutly religious can't indulge in excess every once in a while? Buddhist nuns and monks recently held a fashion show at Tsukiji Honganji temple in Tokyo to promote Buddhism. Nearly 40 monks and nuns from eight major Buddhist sects joined in the event, took the catwalk in bright, colorful robes. In efforts to connect to a younger generation, hip hop music even played over speakers during the show! Wonder if they played any Kanye?

NGL_17heart.JPGIf you're braving NorthPark's clogged parking lots, be sure to stop by Intermix. The store is selling exclusive Give Straight From the HeART tees, designed by abstract Korean artist Jiha Moon, for $60.

Ten percent of the proceeds go to Free Arts, a volunteer-based nonprofit that brings the arts to at-risk children and families.

This tee from Intermix looks pretty cool too!

BlueIris.JPGBlue%20Iris%20flower.JPG

Color "authority" Pantone has selected Blue Iris (#18-3943) as the directional color for fashion, design and home trends for 2008.

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute says in a press release, "As a reflection of the times, Blue Iris brings together the dependable aspect of blue, underscored by a strong, soul-searching purple cast. Emotionally, it is anchoring and meditative with a touch of magic. Look for it artfully combined with deeper plums, red-browns, yellow-greens, grapes and grays."

New York Times' Cathy Horyn explores in her column today!

Terrell Owens: Jessica Simpson is not a fan favorite

7:59 PM Wed, Dec 19, 2007 |
Jason Sheeler   E-mail   News tips

terrell.jpgjessica_simpson_bra_exposed_big.jpg

From the Associated Press:

Terrell Owens has a message for Jessica Simpson: Stay away. The 27-year-old singer-actress has become Public Enemy No. 1 among Dallas Cowboys fans because of a link being made between her appearance at Sunday's game and the poor performance of her new boyfriend, quarterback Tony Romo.

Asked Wednesday about the Simpson scenario, Owens playfully chimed in: "Right now, Jessica Simpson is not a fan favorite - in this locker room or in Texas Stadium."

The Cowboys lost 10-6 to the Philadelphia Eagles and Romo had what was statistically the worst game of his career, all while Simpson sat in a luxury box wearing a pink No. 9 jersey she proudly showed off for television cameras.

The problem for her is, Romo's previous worst game came last December at home to the Eagles when then-girlfriend Carrie Underwood was in attendance.

"With everything that has happened, obviously with the way Tony played and the comparison between her and Carrie Underwood, I think a lot of people feel she has taken his focus away," Owens said, echoing the chatter on sports-talk radio and blogs. "Other than that, she was high on my list until last week.

"Oh, I got a message for her when we make the playoffs. Just stay tuned."

Readers: Do you blame Jessica Simpson for the Cowboys' loss?
