I've been spying TONS of fun, colorful hoodies for guys everywhere. While I wish I could drop $185 for one of the cool Kidrobot ones (right) at Barneys, I ended up finding a fun option yesterday at - surprise - my new fave store Forever 21! The "Paint Splatter" hoodie at Forever 21 NorthPark (left) isn't as thick as the Kidrobot version and has buttons instead of a zipper, but hey -- it's only $23 and just as cool. We've blogged in the past about reader Bryan Massey's sorta hunky resemblance to Patrick Swayze. Well Mr. Massey has moved on to, shall we say, GREENER pastures. The local actor has a bit part in the new movie Mad Money which opened this weekend. We had to find out how the stars looked up close and his experience on the red - errr green - carpet. Luckily, he also took pics for us, including this one where he was standing behind Diane Keaton and Queen Latifah. Here's what he had to say about the experience. "Paris Sunday is supposed to be Lanvin, Louis Vuitton, and Miu Miu. If the law holds for Paris Fashion Week, that takes out Tanya D, Ali Michael , Chanel Iman, Karlie Kloss, Toni Garrn, Ali Stephens... plus anybody new who's getting big. Casting directors are NOT happy." Now, coincidentally, last year around this time the Council of Fashion Designers of America issued model guidelines to "take a stand on issues of anorexia and bulimia amongst models. They include keeping models under age 16 off the runway and not allowing models under 18 to work on fittings or photo shoots past midnight ." (However these were suggestions and not binding.) A fashion guru here says "Paris has always been a wrinkle" because they do not allow under 16s to work the runway, so I wonder how many new wrinkles this new law will create, if any. Developing... Reader Serena Warren brought up an interesting point, "Where are the pumps, necklace and the earrings. If we aren't confused enough, why not create more suspense and keep us guessing. Is it real or is it facsimile of a MAN." Well Serena, it looks like Miuccia wanted to play with a "duality" theme here and sent her lanky male models in outfits that had some feminine flourishes. Style.com's review said, "traditional concepts of masculinity had been turned inside out." Reader Varis Swentz commented, "Oh my gosh! It's hideous! I would kill my husband if he tried to wear that in public. Then again, gay men just might eat it up." Reader Steve W. responded with, "Your insulting the gay male population is not needed. No gay man with any sense of fashion ... which we all have, ya know ... would ever wear this piece of stupidity! Come to think of it, I would never want to see a lesbian in this!" The Bravo producers are such tricksters! Naturally we thought Victorya and Jillian's lack of time management skills would put them in the bottom two, but in the end, it was the overconfident designers that felt the wrath from the judges this week. Sweet P had a great strategy...when faced with the fact that she was working with an egomaniac like Rami (who was adamant about designing the "couture" dress without her input) she did the smart thing and focused on her own "day" look- a one-shouldered silver dress, which surprisingly - looked super duper chic. Rami's complicated drapey avant garde number left the judges yawning and left Heidi remarking, "Unfortunately the only drama we saw was between you and Sweet P!" SLAM! For the life of me, I have no idea why Ricky is still even in this competition. Sure his "minority-overcoming-against-all-odds" bit tugs at heart strings (I have some of those stories myself), but there is one thing that he clearly lacks in this competition - consistency. Unfortunately it was team leader Kit (she's also a wardrobe stylist for E! Entertainment) who got the boot, after her oversized "nesting" creation that looked like a Gone WIth the Wind-reject, had the judges critical of everything from the wrinkled satin to the dowdy fabric. The company's website continues to keep us guessing: "Friends for over 13 years, these LA based designers launched their first clothing collection in 2003. Their designs of classic shapes, striking prints and playful finishes have already gained a fan base from chic women 'round the globe." The line debuts March 1 in Target stores and website. We did some creative googling and figured it out - we think. Looks like the new budget line will likely be helmed by the design duo of Jovovich Hawk -- model-actress-designer Milla Jovovich (yes, the chick in the Fifth Element) and Carmen Hawk. Target is on a roll! According to WWD, the next designer being courted is rumored to be Jonathan Saunders. Dallas Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway is trying to get you to pull your pants up. And he wants to make it the law. Dallas Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway's "Pull 'Em Up" campaign against sagging pants might be getting the thumbs up from the Fort Worth City Council. The council is scheduled to vote Tuesday on a resolution supporting the crusade against the popular fashion trend. At first, Mr. Caraway asked his fellow Dallas council members to outlaw the wearing of pants that hung so low that they exposed the person's underwear, but the city attorney's office was concerned about the legality of such an ordinance. Instead, Mr. Caraway has continued with a public relations campaign that included a series of billboards and a planned appearance on the Dr. Phil show. The resolution on the Fort Worth council agenda said the fashion style might "result in them [young people] being negatively stereotyped and harm their ability to be accepted and participate in general society." Local stylist and designer Andrew Bayer is our guest commentator this week. He co-owns local vintage/thrift hot spot House of Dang! over on 4219 Bryan St. in Dallas. Here's what he had to say about last night's "prom challenge" episode: "My thoughts on Project Runway: There is one person that I can totally relate to this season, and his name is Christian. We are similar in so many ways and here are a few examples: 1. He was voted best dressed at prom and I was a self appointed prom king. In conclusion, I think that Rami is talented, Victorya used cheap rhinestones, the guy with the hat has not made one thing that I like, and Kevin looks like Joey Fatone from N’Sync. This season is getting better and better!" The entry "Project Runway: House of Dang's Andrew Bayer speaks!" has no entry tags.
This one was a doozy. I agree with Christian when he promptly exclaimed, "I think prom is horrible and tacky and gross!" Well, at least the dresses. The contestants had a tres difficult challenge this week -- trying to merge their creative talents and artistic visions with teenage girls wanting cheesy prom dresses. In the end, Victorya emerged victoriously with her youthful, beaded, bright blue number. Kevin, our token "straight" male contestant, got the boot for his bright red halter top mess, that lead Judge Kors to exclaim, "I think she looked like $29.95 prom!" It'll be interesting to see all the male contestants left duke and claw it out! The entry "Project Runway: Victorya emerges victorious" has no entry tags.
Here are a few of his quips, with other contributions, too: "I think prom is horrible tacky and gross," Christian said, when learning the challenge was to create a prom dress. "Do you want it low in the front or the back," Christian asked his client. "Both," she answered. (p.s., I found calling the 16-year olds 'clients' almost creepy. Did anyone else feel awkward every time Tim said that, or are those my issues?) "You guys are really miss me tomorrow when I’m eliminated," he told his roommates. "She wanted so much tacky stuff, I was vey scared," Christian told the judges about his "clients" requests. "I'm not going home because I am listening to a teenager," Sweet P said. "It really looks like something an Italian divorce would wear,” Victorya said about Christians look. "It’s kind of bulging, are you pregnant?" Ricky’s clients mother said, patting her stomach. (Cheers, Mother. Cue: body dysmorphia.)

Just when you think that the Runway team might run out of thrilling challenges, they come up with a trip to the Hershey's store on Times Square, which immediately caused my mouth to start watering like one of Pavlov's dogs. Overloaded with goodies, the contestants headed back to get started on a sugar rush day of designing. The competent, confident Christian knocked out his Reeses Cups goodie in record time while Sweet P put together a monstrosity that Tim referred to as a "coffee filter or maxipad." (Thank God for menopause.) Jillian's Twizzler bustier and skirt seemed like it was destind to flop, especially with Chris' admonitions about edible clothing. But with the help of her model, she pulled it all off beautifully. Poor Elisa. She should have stuck to her stream-of-consciousness/psychobabble method of designing, which really works for her, instead of dwelling on her horrible car accident experience and playing it safe. What was Victorya thinking when she told her model to walk like that? All I could think about was John Cleese's crazy walks in old episodes of Monty Python. My son Dallas said that Ricki's number reminded him of a painting of a Spanish warlord he saw at the Meadows Museum. Zac Posen, who made me promise to take him to Zippers and the Roundup (favorite haunts of many visiting fashion dignitaries) on his next trip to Dallas, seemed to light up when Rami's dress hit the runway. My husband Bill, Dallas and I all loved it and think he could teach Nicholas Ghesquiere a thing or two about how to dress a "tron" woman. Comments about her losing look: "It worries me," said Tim, in response to Elisa’s Hansel and Gretel theme. (She wanted to make something fairy tale for her daughter Calliope. Her daughter wanted her to do Runway and she was picked for Season one, actually. She did this season to "reclaim" life.) Ricky called it "Barney Rubble." "It's not wearable, it's not fabulous," commented guest judge Zac Posen. "Her dress was just a hot mess," Christian says of Elisa's look. He compared the sleeves to kid's "swimmies." “We got a sad brown dress," Heidi said. Elisa told me standing on the runway in front of the judges was like "dodgeball." She began the episode with "I want to make it to the final three." The Booker T. grad left the show with, "I'm going to wander off now." Readers: WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT HER LOOK? Ashtray. The entry "Project Runway: Elisa Jimenez go bye-bye" has no entry tags.
Come on...you all KNEW she wouldn't last. From Episode One, we all sensed Elisa was a little "special" with her kooky spiritual mumbo jumbo -- which quite frankly, was really starting to grow on me. You know her story about getting hit by the Porshe in London and having her head split open made you go AWWW! Not to mention, we also wanted to root for the final remaining Texan still standing. But at the end of the day (literally) the most creative, over-the-top challenge proved far TOO challenging for the over-the-top designer, who wanted to create a "macabre" fairy-tale dress inspired by Gretel. She created something BORING. SO boring that it lead Judge Kors to call it "a brown velvet dress you would find in a flea market" that showed "no joy of candy" and Host Klum to comment that it was "a SAD brown dress". The contestants were literally dragged out of bed to head down to Hershey's Time Square and had five whole minutes to gather materials to create a fashionable, wearable, fun design in ONE day. The designers struggled with this one - and Jillian gets the Tim Gunn award for the day for making it WORK with that sassy, little red twizzler corset ensemble. Readers, what did YOU think of the night's episode. Click COMMENTS and tell us! The entry ""Fortified" Elisa Jimenez leaves Project Runway" has no entry tags.
Rami's winning design (left) had Michael Kors commenting, "It's made really well and fits her beautifully!" Unfortunately Elisa's Gretel-inspired dress left the judges uninspired for showing "no joy of candy". The entry "Project Runway: The winning and losing designs" has no entry tags. WHOA. My fave comment of the night comes from Christian, naturally. "It is a tranny mess up in here," he said, surveying the work room filled with improvised, costume-like garments.
Nina gave a huge thumbs up with, "This girl could go into a studio and be shot for the pages of Elle. She's all set." Go, Chris!

Wow! Yes Amanda [the model] is still in, Amanda walked in my Spring 2007 showing she is a great model. Heidi has some very red lips tonight! I am not loving her dress tonight, it does not fit properly. Twizzlers! Brilliant. I am really enjoying Jillian, I am so curious. [Jillian is the only designer who chose to work with actual candy] I wonder who will get the chocolate body paint! Oh sorry this is not Sports Illustrated. Hahaha! He is talking about Elisa's accident in London -- she was hit by a car and in a coma for 5 days. Yikes. The entry "Project Runway: The News from Malan" has no entry tags.

GUYS! You too can shop at Forever 21 (or XXI as the store signage reads). I've been on a major buying spree at my new fave spot! The whole back half of the ground floor of the NorthPark store is dedicated to menswear and we've been snatching up some great deals from the retailer's Heritage 1981 line -- like this $45 trenchcoat and $34 herringbone jacket. For all of you complaining that there isn't an H+M here to get fashionable finds at dirt cheap prices, we've found your spot! The entry "Cheap and chic menswear at Forever 21" has no entry tags.
The firm promised that when oil reached the $100 mark, they would "produce 100 limited edition Crude Necklaces with a high gloss black surface finish. The pieces can be seen a symbol of mourning for the fossil fuel era." The pieces will be engraved with $100.00 and the date. Buyers will have a choice between powder-coated brass ($100) or a black-patina 18 karat gold ($1000). (you can also get gold-plated silver and soild 14K gold.) Buy the necklaces at their website, here. "Design Glut‘s aim with the limited-edition release is to create a historical marker, in hopes that one day, when you are charging your electric car with your children, you can say, 'I remember when crude hit $100.'" Cool necklace, scary concept. Hmmm. I believe the German word Angstlust is appropriate here. It means "the enjoyment of fear."

In the International Herald Tribune, Alice Rawsthorn discusses the ups and downs of 2007 design and names Berlin Magazine 032C best of the year "for adopting Mike Meiré's flagrantly controversial "New Ugly" style." (cover and inside pictured above.) Blogger Mag Culture says, "but this new 032c is so willfully awkward that the artless feel remains just that, artless." Author Virginia Postrel says in her book The Substance of Style that our current love affair with design and aesthetics drives the global economy...so here's a movement that completely eschews beauty and goes for brutality. Designer Mike Meiré: "There are so many magazines out there which pretend to be cool, sophisticated or even culturally relevant. They all look the same, more or less. (…oouh! I know! There are a few good magazines out there! But I am talking about the rest, the 99.9%!) They all play this stylish “classy” Feuilleton-inspired design game." So, readers, what do you think? Maybe rock and roll isn't dead...it's just morphed into the world of graphic design. The entry "The New Ugly: 2007 Design Ushered in the "Artless"" has no entry tags.

Supermodel Erin Wasson appears in the current Dec. issue of Vogue Australia. The mag profiled the Irving-native (AND 1997 F!D/Kim Dawson Model Search winner), interviewing her when she was attending Rosemount Australian Fashion Week in Sydney. She then headed out to coastal hippie spot Byron Bay with Vogue's fashion team shooting guerrilla-style and worked with the fashion directors on styling herself. Her found vintage jewelry pieces are completely her own -- a small selection of which is for sale at V.O.D. at Victory Park. The earthy photos showcase her "tomboy in fish-nets" style. She also states in the article that her "fashion weakness" is "a really good white T-shirt". COMING SOON: We hear that Erin's collaborating on a line with RVCA! Stay tuned!

From the Associated Press: Terrell Owens has a message for Jessica Simpson: Stay away. The 27-year-old singer-actress has become Public Enemy No. 1 among Dallas Cowboys fans because of a link being made between her appearance at Sunday's game and the poor performance of her new boyfriend, quarterback Tony Romo. Asked Wednesday about the Simpson scenario, Owens playfully chimed in: "Right now, Jessica Simpson is not a fan favorite - in this locker room or in Texas Stadium." The Cowboys lost 10-6 to the Philadelphia Eagles and Romo had what was statistically the worst game of his career, all while Simpson sat in a luxury box wearing a pink No. 9 jersey she proudly showed off for television cameras. The problem for her is, Romo's previous worst game came last December at home to the Eagles when then-girlfriend Carrie Underwood was in attendance. "With everything that has happened, obviously with the way Tony played and the comparison between her and Carrie Underwood, I think a lot of people feel she has taken his focus away," Owens said, echoing the chatter on sports-talk radio and blogs. "Other than that, she was high on my list until last week. "Oh, I got a message for her when we make the playoffs. Just stay tuned." Readers: Do you blame Jessica Simpson for the Cowboys' loss?
