Instant messaging should make communication quick and easy, but the incompatible networks operated by AOL, MSN, Yahoo and Google have kept IM from fulfilling its promise. Think how much less use you'd get from your cellphone if you could only call people who used the same carrier. Fortunately, changes are slowly bridging IM's big divides. The Web-site Meebo gives you a way to monitor all your different IM accounts simultaneously. Now, it looks like Google may be preparing a version of Google Talk that lets users interact directly with people on other networks. The folks at Google Operating System see plenty of evidence to support such a conjecture, and they generally have a good handle on what's going on in Mountain View. Google's been on a pretty good run of new features during the past few weeks. The company has expanding Gmail storage and begun offering IMAP support. It has also begun rolling out a new contact manager and increased email speeds. Cross-platform IM support would be a great extra, one that might propel IM from something that teens use to something everyone uses. E-mail entry: |
