Try a $200 PC

Victor approved the $300 computer when he reviewed the tiny Eee Pc. Now the folks at Cnet News go him one further. They say $300 might be a bit steep for a computer now that three desktop models sell for $200 or less.

But wouldn't such a cheap computer be terrible? Nope. The Everex gPC, the Shuttle KPC and the Mirus Linux PC all use name-brand parts that offer solid performance. They're not powerful enough for video editing or HD gaming, but they're all you need to surf the Web and dash off email.

True, all three of the uber-cheap computers use some flavor of the open-source operating system Linux, but that's no big deal. The recent improvements in Linux have made it easy for even the most technophobic users.

Free applications also work about as well as the expensive programs they replace. You can use Firefox rather than Internet Explorer or Safari when you want to browse the Web. And you can use OpenOffice when you want to write a letter or make a spreadsheet.
